Applications and use case for this product.

There are many different options for 300 blackout when it comes to projectile weight. For training, we recommend ammo that uses a 147 grain or 150 grain projectile, because they are the most common and often cheapest super sonic loads available for the caliber. An important consideration for 300 blackout is how projectile weight affects optic zero. The two most common projectiles used in 300 blackout differ by only 3 grains so they perform similarly to each other at 100 yards. The effect on zero becomes more noticeable as the difference between projectile weight increases. Buying bulk 300 blackout is a great way to avoid constantly changing your optics zero. Morrow Ammo Co offers Ammo Inc 300 blackout 150 gr FMJ because it is a high-quality and affordable round for training. We have tested thousands of rounds of this ammo with a Ruger American Ranch Rifle, a Noveske Shorty 10.5 and a Sugar Weasel 7” from Q with no issues to report.

Why is 300 blackout a good caliber? 300 blackout has super and sub sonic capabilities and offers better ballistics than 556 in short barrels. Sub sonics have a reduced overpenetration risk making them great for home defense, and super sonics have the power to take down a white tail deer.

Is 300 blackout good for hunting? The heavy projectiles used in super sonic 300 blackout carry significant foot pounds of energy downrange making it an effective hunting caliber for small to medium sized game.

Can you hunt with sub sonic 300 blackout? Sub sonic 300 blackout can ethically be used for hunting but has a less effective range compared to super sonic ammunition. Common sub sonics loaded with 200 to 220 grain FMJ projectiles will lose most ballistic performance past 50 yards. Specialized sub sonic 300 blackout ammo from Discreet Ballistics is designed to expand at low velocities and can extend effective range to around 100 yards.

Is 300 blackout good for long range? This question ultimately comes down to your individual use case and definition of long range. Morrow Ammo Co tested the feasibility of 300 blackout at long range with a variety of different platforms and barrel configurations. Using a 10.5” barrel with Ammo Inc 150 Gr FMJ, we  hit a 9” x 15” steel target at 400 yards with ease. For long range hunting, 300 blackout is not a popular caliber as the projectile will lose most of its energy past a few hundred yards. 300 blackout is more than capable of hitting targets at long range, the issue comes from the projectiles lack of power when it makes contact.

Is 300 blackout and 556 interchangeable? No, doing so may cause injury to yourself and to those around you. AR’s chambered in 300 blackout or 556 use almost all of the same parts with the exception of the barrel.

Is it worth it to buy 300 blackout specific magazines? 300 blackout specific mags were developed to accommodate the longer length projectiles used in sub sonic loads. Most super sonic 300 blackout ammo works well in standard 556 magazines.

History of 300 Blackout (7.62x35)

300 Blackout is the modern iteration of .300 Whisper, a wild cat cartridge that was developed in the 1990’s. 300 Blackout as we know it today is constructed with a .308 projectile loaded into a shortened .223 brass case. 300 Blackout fits into standard 5.56/.223 AR-15 magazines. The caliber is a common chambering for AR-15’s as well as bolt action style rifles. Common projectile weights for this caliber range between 110 grains and 220 grains. Most sub sonic loads will have a 188 grain or heavier projectile. Fast twist rate barrels will help stabilize the flight path of heavier sub-sonic projectiles.
